Boston. 4-6 Sept 2014

Thursday, 4 Sept, up and underway from Provincetown at 0845 to make the long motor trip 45 NM trip to Boston.
Provincetown (Ptown) on the tip of Cape Cod.
We were making our own wind; 5kts on the nose. We were still undecided where we would stay for the night, Quincy, Hull, Dorchester? Jo looked north of the harbor (near Logan airport) and found the neighborhood of Winthrop with a protected bay, fuel, and two Yacht Clubs. While filling the diesel tanks we chatted up the friendly owner named Lloyd. He suggested the Winthrop YC saying it welcomes yachts from other yachting organizations. (Lloyd called the dockmaster  We called them and explained that we were members of the Hunter Sailing Association, which is a member of the CBYCA. They welcomed us and allowed us to use one of their mooring for free and the use of their club for showers and dinner. For their hospitality, we felt obligated to go ashore and have dinner and drinks at their club. Everybody at WYC was so very nice and friendly.

Sunset over Boston.
Friday, we got underway at around 1100 for our trip into Boston Harbor and the Constitution Marina for the night. Constitution Marina is just west of the USS Constitution and as close as you can get to the Charles River in Charlestown. What a great location. Bunker Hill was behind us, across the Charlestown bridge is Boston's North End, with the Old North Church, the Italian section of town, and the best...the Garden is right there as well.

We first rode the bikes to Ace hardware to buy nuts and bolts to repair the handle for the hatch over the kitchen. A line had caught the handle and broken it during our sail into Boston Harbor. We then toured the North End a bit, before returning to the boat to get ready to ride to Cambridge (MIT) to see a play that Joelle's first cousin's daughter was in. The ride to MIT took about 15 minutes. Had we taken the "T" or a bus, it would have taken us over 40 minutes to get to MIT.
Friday night races on the Charles River.
Saturday morning, my west coast cousins Pat and Sandy, along with Sandy's hubby Ian, came over for a visit and breakfast. They were on their way to Maine for a Windjamer cruise. It was fun to show them the boat so they could see their staterooms when they come on a Daruma cruise.

Some random Boston shots from our bike ride through Beantown.

Walking across the Charles River Locks.

Paul Revere on the Freedom Trail.

Awesome! Installed at this bike parking lot in the North End was an air pump!

A storm front was predicted this evening so Jo and I headed back to the protection of Winthrop Harbor to ride it out at the YC.
Daruma at sunset - BEFORE the storm. We decided to ride in out from the comfort of the Winthrop YC bar.

Here it comes!

There's Daruma on a mooring ball by the large piling on the right.

Still no rain in Winthrop.

Big winds! and rain.

All done! Whew!
