The 30th Wreckers Cup Race - 25 Jan 2015

Schooners' Wharf, in Key West, hosts the Wreckers Cup Race.

Historically, when a ship wrecked on the reef, the first boat to the wreck was entitled to all the salvage.

This is a fun race from KW harbor out 6 miles to Sand Key Light.  The $30 entry fee includes free drinks and hors d'oeuvres at the pre-race Captains' Mtg and free BBQ dinner for 4 at the Awards Ceremony. As Mark said, "We could pay the money, not race, and just go for the free dinner."

Cousin Stu and Sharon Johnson were our crew and did an awesome job trimming the kite and driving. The wind was fluky; 3-8 kts from the N so it was downwind all the way.

We took the race seriously. Instead of lightening the load, we sailed with our dink off the stern and laundry flying.

And then there were Rum Drinks.

The Race Committee was fascinated by our parasail kite with cut-out and wing.

Mark was called up on stage to explain how WE WON in the multihull class!!!!!

1st Place!

Our Crew: Stu and Sharon Johnson
In Daruma's first race ever!

What a day!

CHEERS!
